I'm not sure if I have ever wanted to go on a helicopter until I started to research our trip to Kauai. The countless photos and videos I saw of the island from the air convinced me to get over my fear of heights (for the hour) and take off, literally! There are a ton of helicopter companies that tour Kauai, but we chose to go with Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours for two reasons: 1) the tour was private, meaning we weren't squished between strangers fighting for a view and 2) they offered doors-off flights! You may think I'm crazy but I knew that we would have some incredible, uninterrupted views without a big door and window in our way!
This was completely a surprise for Ryan, by the way. The morning of our tour I took him to a beach just across the street from the Mauna Loa headquarters so that we wouldn't be late. When we walked over to the office his jaw dropped! I was a little nervous, to be honest, but I knew we would be safe and it would be unforgettable!
The trip 100% was! We got to tour the entire island, seeing the volcano, hundreds of waterfalls including Jurassic Falls and my favorite the Weeping Wall, which is an entire rock wall of waterfalls! We flew over farmland, jungles, and of course, the Nā Pali Coast! We thought it was stunning from the land and sea, but by air it was a completely different experience! It really took my breath away - not joking!
While the helicopter tours are a bit of a splurge I highly recommend doing one! It really is a once in a lifetime experience and one you will remember forever!
